1931. "The Star-Spangled Banner" has an interesting history. The words are from a poem called "Defense of Fort M’Henry" by Francis Scott Key. The melody is from an English drinking song called "To Anacreon In Heaven." President Wilson made the song the national anthem in 1916 by executive order, but it wasn’t until 1931 that Congress affirmed that order with a law.
