Macau. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. Ownership was transferred from China to Portugal in 1887. Formal sovereignty was handed back to the Chinese on December 20, 1999. Macau is now under the "one country, two systems" policy, in which Macau is responsible for internal affairs and China handles defense and foreign affairs.
