The Convention of Kanagawa, signed between representatives of the Tokugawa shogunate and Commodore Matthew C. Perry of the United States Navy. Before this treaty was signed, Japan only allowed two Dutch ships a year into the port of Nagasaki. The treaty opened two port cities to American trade and established the basis of an American diplomatic mission in Japan.
