Kesselring. Although an Air Force (Luftwaffe) officer, Albert Kesselring commanded the overall defense of Italy throughout 1943-44. He was called "Smiling Albert" because he always seemed to be smiling, even in his official photos. His own troops called him "Onkel (Uncle) Albert"
