Operation Vittles. From June 1948 to September 1949, the Soviet Union cut West Berlin off from access by water, railroad, and land. The United States, Great Britain, and France, in over 250,000 flights, delivered more than two million tons of food, energy, and supplies, saving the people of the city. "Vittles" was the name of the American operation.
