Load-line for ships. Parliament member Samuel Plimsoll succeeded in having the Unseaworthy Ships Bill passed due to his concern with ships sinking because of overloading. The mark, still used worldwide, designates a ship is properly loaded when the waterline is the same as the Plimsoll mark line.
