Coral Sea. The battle was fought May 4-8, 1942, between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. All combat was conducted by airplanes flying off carriers or island airfields. The battle prevented a planned Japanese invasion of Port Morseby, New Guinea, but cost the US the carrier Lexington and damaged another, Yorktown.
