Hiram. A clerical error when he entered West Point listed him as Ulysses Simpson Grant; Simpson was his mother’s maiden name, and a brother three years younger was named Samuel Simpson Grant. Ulysses preferred U.S. Grant to H.U. Grant and didn’t correct the error.
