Dentistry. Before Dr. John Harris opened this school, dentists in the US did an apprenticeship with an experienced dentist and the profession was not considered worthy of formal schooling. In 1840 the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, founded by Harris’ brother Chapin and Horace H. Hayden, became the world’s first dental college.
