Banana. The yellow fruit was considered a luxury food and a delicacy. They sold for 10 cents apiece (more than two dollars in today’s money) and were eaten with a knife and fork. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that bananas and other tropical fruits became cheaper and more available, thanks to better shipping and storage methods.
