1954. Before World War II, Britain was a major importer of foodstuffs – some 70% of its food was imported in 1939. To insure fair distribution of the now-limited stocks of meat, cheese and certain fruits, the wartime government started rationing in 1940. While other types of rationing were lifted shortly after the end of the war, meat and cheese rationing continued until 1954.
