Acadia in Maine. Dorr, of Boston, moved to Mount Desert Island after his first visit in 1868. Enamored by the beauty, he joined Charles W. Eliot’s campaign to preserve the island and began buying land with his own inheritance and donations from John D. Rockefeller Jr. After Acadia National Park was established in 1919 he served as its first superintendent until his death.
