Margaret Corbin. She accompanied her husband, John, in the Revolutionary War. He was killed while defending Fort Washington on Manhattan Island on Nov. 16, 1776, and Margaret filled his post. Severely wounded by musket balls and grapeshot, she permanently lost use of one arm. Congress voted her a pension. She is buried at West Point.
