Swallowed whole by a whale. The story claimed Bartley, a crewman of the whaling ship Star of the East, was swallowed off the coast of the Falkland Islands. No one saw this, and it was assumed he had drowned. The crew harpooned the whale and was astonished to find the missing Bartley in its belly. The story was later largely debunked.
