Black Beauty, published in 1877. Sewell lived in Victorian England. Horses worked in various industries during that time and were cruelly treated. Sewell wrote the book as an indictment of this treatment. Her book was largely responsible for ending the use of bearing reins, which held a horse’s head unnaturally high when pulling such weight as a carriage.
