Father’s Day. Dodd and her five sisters and brothers were raised by their widowed father. Washington State was the first to observe Father’s Day. At least one Father’s Day observance, held in Fairmont, W.Va., in 1908, predated the Spokane event but unlike Dodd’s event, it was not made an annual observance.
