Marbury v. Madison. William Marbury had been appointed a justice of the peace by President John Adams, but Adams’ successor, Thomas Jefferson, ordered Secretary of State James Madison not to deliver the paperwork. Marbury, understandably miffed, asked the Supreme Court to force Madison to deliver the documents. The Court, however, found the law under which Marbury had sued to be unconstitutional.
