Devil’s Island
Devil’s Island. Open from 1852 to 1953, Devil’s Island was a French penal colony some 14 miles off the coast of French Guiana. Over the 101 years of its existence it housed some 80,000 prisoners, the vast majority of whom never returned to France. Many died of tropical diseases such as malaria, others were made into "forced colonists" and were not allowed to leave the colony.
