Oklahoma City, Okla. On July 16, 1935, the first "Park-O-Meter" was installed at the intersection of 1st Street and Robinson Avenue, and charged a nickel an hour. Drivers naturally resented the idea of having to pay to park on public streets. But the parking meter idea soon took off, and by 1951 there were 1 million meters throughout the US.
