Saint Francis, known as the patron saint of animals, was born and buried in Assisi in this country.

Italy. Francis was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. As a young man, he decided on a life of poverty and service to God and the poor. He held that all creatures are brothers and sisters under God and preached sermons to animals. In 1228, two years after his death, he was canonized by the Catholic Church.
