George Stephenson
George Stephenson, a coal miner in England who enjoyed tinkering with mine machinery. He designed the first steam locomotive to run on railroad tracks. On July 25, 1814, his locomotive pulled eight loaded coal wagons at a speed of about four miles an hour up an incline on the Cillingwood Railway. He went on to build 16 steam locomotives.
