A liquid fuel rocket. Goddard was a physicist by training and a largely self-taught engineer. He performed various in lab experiments with rocket engines throughout the 1920s, until he and his crew felt ready for a full scale test. On March 18, 1926, his rocket fueled by gasoline and liquid-oxygen went 41 feet into the air and 184 feet downrange for a total flight time of 2.5 seconds.
