Sovereign Military Order of Malta, officially the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes. The order was founded as the "Fraternitas Hospitalaria" about 1050 to provide care for the poor and sick pilgrims to the Holy Land in Jerusalem. It became a military order – Order of St. John of Jerusalem – in 1099 after the city was conquered in the First Crusade.
