British World War II flying ace Douglas Bader had this physical disability.

Missing both legs. Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader shot down at least 20 enemy planes during WWII. In 1931 he crashed his plane and lost his legs, one above the knee and one below. Medically discharged from the RAF, he was recalled at the start of the war. Bader fought throughout the Battle of Britain, but was shot down over France in 1941 and spent the rest of the war as a POW.
