Kriegspiel. Invented in Prussia around 1811, it was soon very popular among Prussian army officers. Updated rules were published in 1824 and 1862. These games, played with dice representing the role of chance and "friction" in war, were often umpired by veterans who used their combat experience to help judge the outcome.
