Immigrants. Born into a family of social activists in Nebraska, Abbott lived for nine years at Chicago’s Hull House, an immigrant settlement house co-founded by prominent social activist Jane Addams. Abbott headed the Immigrants’ Protective League to curb their widespread exploitation. She also served as director of the U.S. Children’s Bureau from 1921 to 1934.
