Slinky. Naval engineer Richard James invented the now-classic toy while trying to develop springs to stabilize sensitive shipboard instruments. His wife, Betty, named the wayward spring "Slinky," and they founded James Industries. Richard left in 1960 to join a cult, but Betty kept manufacturing the Slinky. In 2001, she was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame.
