Mark Twain wrote in 1904, "I was the first person in the world to apply the typemachine to literature." There is some dispute as to which novel was the first one typewritten. Twain claimed it was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer while others say it was his Life on the Mississippi. Twain did not do the typing himself; rather he dictated to an assistant.
