Robert W. Thompson invented the air-filled tire for horse drawn carriages in 1845. Thompson called his invention the Aerial Wheel and it had a canvas inner tube filled with air surrounded by a leather casing. The design never really caught on, and John Dunlop invented the rubber pneumatic tire 40 years later without reference to Thompson’s design.
