Dr. Seuss, in his 1950 book "If I Ran the Zoo" used the word "nerd" in the sentence: "And then, just to show them, I’ll sail to Ka-Troo/And Bring Back an It-Kutch, a Preep, and a Proo,/A Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too!" In this context a "nerd" is an exotic animal. By 1951 the word had gotten the slang meaning of a "square" or someone not "in the know."
