Andrew Jackson. Calhoun resigned in December 1832 during Jackson’s 1829 – 1837 presidency, when his native South Carolina threatened secession over a US tariff (the "Nullification Crisis") and Jackson vowed to send troops to force the state to remain in the Union. Calhoun served in the U. S. Senate for many years and was John Tyler’s Secretary of State.
