Lyon Gardiner Tyler son of President John Tyler and his second wife Julia Gardiner Tyler. Under Lyon Tyler’s leadership the college became coeducational. He worked in law and education and became a historical scholar publishing several books particularly on the history of Virginia and of the Tyler family.
