David G. Farragut. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1810 and at the age of 12, during the War of 1812, he commanded a captured ship. He achieved his greatest fame with Battle of Mobile Bay, Mississippi, in 1864. His victory there, along with Gen. William Sherman’s capture of Atlanta, contributed to Lincoln’s victory in the 1864 election.
