Ngo Dinh Diem. First president of the Republic of South Vietnam, he was killed during a violent coup lead by Gen. Duong Van Minh on Nov. 2, 1963. American involvement in Vietnam had been primarily an advisory role, but following the assassinaton of Diem, U.S. troops became more involved in direct combat.
