Henry "Hap" Arnold. One of the world’s first military pilots, Arnold became Army Air Force Commanding General in 1941 and led the Army Air Force throughout WWII. On March 23, 1946, he was promoted permanently to General of the Army. On May 7, 1949, an act of Congress changed his final rank to General of the Air Force.
