Lyon Gardiner Tyler, son of President John Tyler and his second wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler. Under Lyon Tyler’s leadership, the college became coeducational. He worked in law and education in Virginia and became a historical scholar, publishing several books, particularly on the history of Virginia and the history of the Tyler family.
