Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte joined the French Army as a private in 1780. By 1794 he was a general; Napoleon made him a marshal in 1804. Elected crown prince of Sweden in 1810 because of his kindness to Swedish prisoners of war, he became King Charles XIV in 1818.
