Britain. Robert Peel, summoned to form a Tory ministry following the resignation of Lord Melbourne and the Whig cabinet, asked Queen Victoria to dismiss all her ladies of the bedchamber who had Whig husbands. The queen refused and convinced Lord Melbourne to return as prime minister; he and the Whigs would narrowly hold power for two years. At that time the question arose again, but the prince consort arranged for the ladies to resign voluntarily.
