Cincinnati. The son of Lexington, the fastest four-mile thoroughbred in the U.S. at the time, the horse was given to Grant in St. Louis after the November 1864 Battle of Chattanooga. Grant’s son, Frederick Dent, wrote that the horse was given to the general by a man who was ill and knew he would never ride again; the man’s name was S.S. Grant. The general kept Cincinnati till the horse died in 1878.
