Socialist. Debs was a labor movement advocate who ran for president in 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920. A vocal opponent of World War I, he was sentenced to a 10-year prison term in 1918 under the Espionage Law. He received one million votes for president in 1920 although he was in prison. President Warren Harding commuted Debs’ sentence in1921.
