Their eldest son, Albert "Bertie," the future King Edward VII. While stationed at an army training camp in Ireland, Bertie began a liaison with Nellie Clifton, a young actress, and news of the affair became public. Prince Albert, already overworked, experienced great concern and stress over the matter. When Albert died on Dec. 14, 1861, probably from typhus, the queen blamed her son’s behavior for weakening his constitution, leading to his death.
