Portugal. In the Battle of Ourique, July 25, 1139, Prince Afonso Henriques of the House of Burgundy defeated a Moorish army led by Ali ibn Yusuf. Accounts of the battle are murky, as are Henriques’ claims to have been proclaimed King of Portugal, but he was acclaimed by the estates-general and accepted laws that included the independence of Portugal.
