Schuyler Colfax. At various times a member of the Whig, Native American (Know-Nothing), and Republican parties, the ever-amiable "Smiler" Colfax was elected House Speaker in December 1863 and was vice-president to Ulysses S. Grant during Grant’s first term. Abraham Lincoln privately described the former newspaper man as "a little intriguer ? aspiring beyond his capacity."
