Lissa. On July 20, 1866, during the Third Italian Independence War, ironclads and wooden vessels of the Austrian Navy confronted a similarly mixed but larger Italian fleet near the island of Lissa off Dalmatia. The Austrians managed to win the engagement by sinking two Italian ironclads. This was also the first clash of ironclads at sea.
