USS Fanny. On Aug. 3, 1861, the ship served as a base for a balloon reconnaissance along the Potomac River that disproved rumors of a Confederate force approaching the capital. On Nov. 11, a ship-based balloon was used at New Market Bridge. CSS Teaser ran up a balloon during the Battle of Hampton Roads, in support of CSS Virginia (formerly Merrimac) in March 1862.
