Their party’s presidential candidate. In 1884, the Republicans nominated James G. Blaine of Maine, a former Speaker of the House, U.S. senator, and Secretary of State. The Democrats nominated Grover Cleveland, known for his honesty. The Mugwumps considered Blaine untrustworthy and supported Cleveland. Mugwump comes from the Algonquian mugquomp, translated as great man or war leader.
