In 1191 the French besieged the castle for a month while her husband was elsewhere, and she directed its defense. In 1217 she again directed the defense of the castle, this time against rebel barons. For five months in 1216, following the death of her husband, she served as constable of Lincolnshire by the appointment of King John.
