Ireland. Private Daniel Hough emigrated from his homeland to the United States in 1849, joined the U.S. Army, and was among the Union soldiers in Fort Sumter when it was bombarded. No one as killed during the bombardment, but while the defenders were firing a 100-gun salute as they lowered the flag, a charge went off prematurely, killing Hough and mortally wounding Pvt. Edward Galloway.
