Angel of Marye’s Heights. At the Battle of Fredericksburg Kirkland, a sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Infantry, gathered all the canteens he could carry and, at great personal risk, took water to Union wounded lying in the fields at the base of Marye’s Heights. He was killed less than a year later at Chickamauga.
