James Dearing. The brigadier general and his Laurel Brigade of Virginia cavalry were part of the force sent to deal with a bridge-burning detachment of 500 – 800 Union troops. All the Federals were killed or captured in the fight at High Bridge, Virginia, but Dearing was mortally wounded in the chest.
